FrankCRM FAQ

Answers to frequently asked questions

The access data are included in the ReadMe.txt file. Check your download of FrankCRM.

In the free trial version, you can only log in as a user with administration rights. Open file with double click and then specify name and password. The data is contained in the ReadMe.txt file.

In the full versions there are additional access data for the developer. The developer logs in to the file directly using FileMaker’s default password prompt. To do this, open the file on Mac with the ALT key pressed and on Windows with the left SHIFT key.

FrankCRM is a CRM solution for FileMaker. The solution focuses on the management of addresses and contacts, as well as on the creation of sales documents for these addresses. The structure, although limited to these few things, is very extensively designed. This allows many requirements to be supported directly with simple configuration options.

The exact scope is best viewed with the trial version.

FrankCRM is a software based on FileMaker. More precisely, FrankCRM is a FileMaker file. In order to open this file, it requires a current FileMaker license (usually from the last two years). Those who do not have a FileMaker license can download a trial version of FileMaker directly from the claris.com website.

The file can be used just as easily on Mac as on Windows. In addition, there are web-based options. The same files are used everywhere, at most optimized for specific platforms.

FrankCRM has been optimized for a desktop application. Other use, such as for iOS or web, was assumed in FrankCRM and the structure is correspondingly flexible. However, the implementation is a task for a developer.

Yes, the full version is a 100% open FileMaker file. There are no restrictions. Those who buy a standard license or an extended license receive this open file and can extend it as they wish.

No. Of course, FrankCRM, as a FileMaker solution, requires a current version of FileMaker. However, there are no other dependencies. No plug-ins or paid additional licenses are used. You can of course add them yourself, but there are no dependencies in the delivery version of FrankCRM.

There are 3 versions:

  1. Free trial version
Limitations: 1 user and up to 20 addresses. There is no time limit. For some self-employed people, the free version will cover more than is ever needed.
  2. Standard license
This is an open FileMaker file with full developer access. There are far more settings options here and a dedicated developer dashboard. You need the standard version if you want to customize FrankCRM, share it with multiple users or install it on a FileMaker Server.
This is a license for 1 end customer.
  3. Resale license
Developers can use FrankCRM as a basis for their own software solution. The resale license allows selling any number of own industry solutions to any number of end customers, of which FrankCRM is a part. The resale license is also useful for companies that develop their own software solutions and work at different locations.

There are differences between the free and paid versions:

  1. The free version offers the following languages:
    English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese
  2. The full versions offer practically unlimited languages. Automated translation is possible using a (free) account on deepl.com and supports all languages offered there. Other languages can also be added, in which case the translation must be inserted manually or added via an import.

FrankCRM supports any currencies. Internally, a currency table is used, in which conversion rates are entered. These are used for the price calculations. Even if you use only one currency, you have to define it once.

FrankCRM supports a semi-automatic matching with freecurrencyapi.com and offers from an API interface all currencies offered there for free. Over 30 currencies are currently available. In FrankCRM, you choose a base currency, which is then used to query the other conversion rates and use them internally.

Those who need more rare currencies can expand to about 160 currencies to choose from with a paid subscription. These can then all be used and updated if desired.

However, it also works without automatic adjustment. Currencies can be specified manually with a conversion rate. For example, if you intend to work with only one currency, you need to specify only that one currency.

The free version is just that: free. The only restrictions are the limitation to 1 user and a maximum of 20 addresses (1x your own address and 19x another address). FrankCRM has been set up so that new versions can be used and data from an older version of FrankCRM can be easily imported. This will keep the free version current for many years to come.

The free version of FrankCRM is perfect

  • to test the solution
  • as a professional CRM solution for micro businesses and freelancers at zero cost
  • as a source of ideas for FileMaker developers (here you go)

Yes, but you need at least the standard version (full version). There are some limitations with the free version:

  • The free version cannot be customized except through the accessible configuration options.
  • The free version has no FileMaker administration.

It is not possible to upgrade the free version to a full version. The standard version, as a full version, is a different file that can be obtained only through sales. However, FrankCRM makes it especially easy to import data from a free version into a full version.

The short answer is: FrankCRM saves time and money.

A more detailed answer: FrankCRM is the result of a longer development. Rebuilding the same flexible approach takes at least a year of development. Every detail must be tested, concepts must be developed, discarded, found anew. A lot of experience with concrete projects flows into the development. FrankCRM is a starting solution but also a learning project for a modern FileMaker development.

Already the basis FM Starter has been developed further for 10 years. FrankCRM was developed with the help of FM Starter. Older CRM developments and many years of sales experience went into the development of the new FrankCRM.

  • Developers therefore benefit from the know-how and the existing setup, from proven and tested concepts and therefore save an extremely large amount of development time.
  • FrankCRM is based on universally applicable solutions from FM Starter, such as multilingualism, a user management or a globally functioning navigation. Every further development benefits from this.
  • The further development as CRM solves many subtasks professionally and reliably. The design was kept as simple and transparent as possible. This applies to layouts and scripts, as well as to detailed configuration layouts.

Yes. Data is yours and can be exported at any time. The function is located in the administrator’s area. All tables with all fields are exported and copied as CSV files into a freely selectable directory. This can be easily understood with the free trial version.

In the free version, only data from previous FrankCRM versions can be imported. For an import from other applications you need the standard version. There you can import data with all the possibilities FileMaker offers.

However, importing alone is not enough. FrankCRM is a relational database and required relationships must be carefully aligned. This is possible, but does not work with a few clicks. It is recommended to implement the import step by step, along with needed customizations. This has nothing to do with FrankCRM specifically, but with the fact that software solutions are built differently. This must be taken into account. If you don’t have a system yet, you can start using FrankCRM right away and don’t need an import.

Kursiv has already created a CRM solution called “KIM Office” more than 10 years ago. We can drastically simplify the import of data from KIM Office and offer import as a service.

FrankCRM does not want to be able to do everything. It is part of the concept that just not everything is done. After all, what is “everything”? The requirements of each company are different. That is why FrankCRM focuses on the basic requirements of address management and sales documents.

This limitation is not a restriction, but the best condition for further development. However, the existing areas were set up with maximum flexibility. A value added tax (VAT) calculation, for example, can be done in many ways. To install them completely takes a lot of time. FrankCRM is not just about invoices across the board, but many detailed issues have been neatly resolved down to the last detail. This creates a reliable foundation that can usually be configured with just a few clicks and requires no further programming.

Less is more when implemented carefully and with versatility in mind.
