Fixes for MacOS 14 Sonoma and PDF layouts
One danger in software development is adding more and more functions. Software solutions then tend to become confusing, cumbersome and therefore useless. With FrankCRM, we are currently trying to reduce to the maximum (“Reduce to the Max”). Less is more. However, it remains important to release bug fixes and minor improvements. The new version 1.6 is such a maintenance update.
PDF conflicts fixed
Sales documents can be output as PDF files. The files can be easily processed on Mac and opened and processed in most PDF solutions. However, there were isolated problems with Adobe Acrobat and on Windows.
This has now been localized: There may be isolated objects on the FileMaker layout that do not allow a PDF file to be opened under Adobe Acrobat. This applies in particular to line objects.
The print layouts for sales documents have therefore been revised in the current version. Individual lines were replaced. For the Swiss payment slip, the perforation lines have been replaced by a background graphic. This seems to have solved all the problems for the time being.
Swiss QR Code
FrankCRM supports Swiss QR codes and has integrated a complete payment slip. However, anyone who has updated to MacOS 14 Sonoma has noticed significant problems. Although the QR codes were generated, they were often not saved back into the data records. Processing was interrupted. The phenomenon occurs under both FileMaker Pro 19 and 20 and is related to the update to MacOS 14 Sonoma. It seems that JavaScript is processed much more slowly in the web viewer.
A delay has been built into the HTML template for generating the QR code. Everything works as before.

Bugfixes and new functions
About three weeks ago, FrankCRM was released in a first version. Since then, there have been regular small updates to meet the requests and feedback from early adopters. Version 1.4 now adds even new features.
New functions
How to create a trial version has been completely redesigned to make the settings clearer to manage. Corresponding settings pages have been added to the developer dashboard for the full version of FrankCRM.
There are now two ways to control access to the software in the full version:
- Trial version (new)
Here we are talking about a few parameters and a simple limitation. This is perfect for simply creating a trial version. We recommend using FileMaker’s developer tools to export a trial version without administration. This makes the delivery of a trial version particularly easy and secure. - FM Registrations
FrankCRM is based on FM Starter and therefore has an integrated unlock module for FM Registrations. FM Registr ations is an optional product that can be used to create activation codes for your own FileMaker solutions. They can be easily decoded in FrankCRM and the information can be integrated as desired.
Both options are available in a full version of FrankCRM.
When creating a product, you can activate automatic generation of article numbers and product description. This is where discrepancies arose. The implementation has been simplified and improved.
Bugfixes
After the first release, new versions were released almost daily. This was used to counter initial feedback. In the free version, a few scripts did not work as they should. All of this has been cleaned up. In particular, it was about these two things:
- The navigation of buttons led to wrong pages
- An automatic creation of article numbers led to frequent number changes.
These two bugs have been fixed. The version runs stable and is so in use.

New versions of FrankCRM are made available through the same links used to obtain products. You don’t have to request a new download if you still have the link.
- Free version: Here you use the same link that you received for the first download. You create a new request via:
- Full version: This is downloaded directly from your order. All products come with 1 year of free downloads included. After that, the downloads for the full version expire. Renewal at a discounted price is possible.
Import of the old data
When downloading a new version of FrankCRM, the data from the last file can be easily imported. The function is located on the left side of the menu, as an option for the administrator. You open the new version and close the old version. After that select “Import data” on the “Import” layout.
The import runs fully automatically. However, keep in mind that the import only takes into account the tables that are included in the original version of FrankCRM. If you want to import your own tables later, this requires development effort.

The «UserAccounts» module for managing FileMaker accounts in FM Starter has been updated
FM Starter just received a new update. The new version 2.4 is a maintenance update with various small optimizations and bug fixes. User management got a useful new feature.
Name and password
FM Starter, our starter file for new FileMaker projects, offers various modules for new projects. Below this is a user administration called «UAC User Accounts». In this user administration, administrators can create new accounts for users and define access data, rights, a default language and start and end dates.
Previously, user name and user password were specified. The username corresponded to the email address and the password was randomly generated by an algorithm.
Name and password can now also be set manually. In certain circumstances this can be helpful. If you switch to manual assignment, you can trigger the change at any time by redefining the access rights. This process is necessary because the user table is just an interface between users and FileMaker accounts. These two must be synchronized whenever there is a change. The new definition of access rights ensures this synchronization.

Various minor and a few major changes
The current update for FM Starter includes bug fixes, minor improvements, and a few major changes. The aim of this update was to make FM Starter easier and clearer.

- A variant with a map window was created for navigation
- For operation under Windows, the menus were explicitly switched on at startup
- The JKE Errorlog module has been removed (as announced)

Simpler and better documented
FM Registrations 1.5 is a major update, although technically not much has changed. These are the changes in the current update:
- simplified user interface
- New manuals in German and English
- New Videos in German and English
- Adjustment Expiration date in code (see below)

Simpler handling
FM Registrations has been completely modernized with this update. There is a simpler user interface and the workflows have been streamlined. Overall, the handling as well as the implementation in the own FileMaker application is simplified.

FM Registrations bietet die Möglichkeit ein Verfalldatum in dem Lizenzcode mitzugeben. Das ist insbesondere dann interessant, wenn man die Software beispielsweise mit Jahreslizenzen verkauft. Nun speichert FileMaker jedoch eine Lokalinformation in jeder Datei, die auch dann beibehalten bleibt, wenn man die Datei an einem anderen Ort aufmacht und nutzt. FM Registrations hat eine europäische Datumsformatierung. Wurde die Datei in den USA aufgemacht, wurde ein definitives Verfalldatum nicht im amerikanischen Format, sondern im europäischen Format (entsprechend der Lokale in der FileMaker Datei) gespeichert. Das konnte zu falschen Datumsangaben führen. Mehr dazu auch im Beitrag «Datumsformatierung in FileMaker».
Neu wird ein definitives Verfalldatum als absolute Zahl im Code eingebunden. Damit werden die Probleme der Lokale Information umgangen. Das Datum wird durch LiesAlsZahl ( [Datum] ) in eine Zahl umgewandelt. Die Rückwandlung erfolgt durch LiesAlsDatum ( [ZAHL] ) und muss vom Entwickler so in der eigenen Lösung berücksichtigt werden.

FM Unlock
The example file contains the unlock module. This has been renamed to “FM Unlock” to make the function immediately obvious. The module “FM Unlock” has to be integrated into the own file by the developer, so that license codes of FM Registrations are evaluated correctly.
Encryption and decryption is done using a secret code created with the “FM Registrations” application. Read more on the product page.

The starting point or new FileMaker projects is now available in version 2
Italic has just launched the new version FM Starter 2. The start file for new FileMaker projects has already integrated all the basic functions so that new projects can be implemented more easily and quickly.
What’s new in FM Starter 2?
The most important innovation is a simplification of all functions. “The most difficult task is to simplify functions and modules,” says developer Karsten Risseeuw. «The central modules for navigation, user administration and for multilingual text labels have been completely redeveloped. But there are also some new modules, such as a module for multilingual help texts or a to-do list for the developer. Very important: Compared to the previous version, several modules have been left out. The focus is now on more functionality for the developer, less on functions for end users. “
The whole user interface has been optimized and is now much more accessible. A standard theme is included for the design, which has been further improved for version 2.
Work more productively
FM Starter is neither an address management nor an ERP software. FM Starter is what every developer needs again and again, but preferably not reprogrammed every time. FM Starter combines everything that is needed to start a new project in one file: globally usable navigation, user administration, project structure and much more.
The best part is that everything is already coordinated. For example, the entire solution is multilingual from the start – which also applies to user management and navigation and every element on every page.
This startup file doesn’t do your job, but it does make it a lot easier. New projects can be launched in no time. Configuring instead of programming is the motto. All settings of the file are clearly arranged in a dedicated developer dashboard. Maintenance scripts make it easy to clean up settings. Almost all functions were developed as modules and are therefore both easy to understand in terms of structure and functional in solving tasks.
More products for FileMaker developers
Kursiv Software has significantly lowered the price of FM starters. This corresponds to the new strategy of offering various complementary products that individually fulfill clearly defined tasks but which can also be used together. Smaller units, therefore, several.
In addition to FM Starter, that is already the case today FM registrations , which can be used to generate license codes for FileMaker applications.
